Dark Knight of the Soul
If I take death into my life, acknowledge it, and face it squarely, I will free myself from the anxiety of death and the pettiness of life - and only then will I be free to become myself.

Since his arrest in January, 2011, I have known more about the events that began this spiral than I have wanted to know. Aaron consulted me as a friend and lawyer. He…

These Beautiful Bridges Are Just For Animals

by Jess Zimmerman

If we’re going to keep putting roads in the middle of their habitats, animals are sometimes going to need to cross the road. But it’s better for everyone involved if they don’t have to push a button and wait for the light to change, because they don’t have thumbs and nine times out of 10 they’ll just careen into the side of your car. Which is why some highways have overpasses built specifically for animals like deer, elk, and grizzly bears.

Nobody teaches moose pedestrian etiquette like “look both ways,” but they figure out pretty quickly that crossing the terrifying asphalt river is safer if you take the beautiful grassy bridge. That’s just my guess at a moose’s internal life, but there’s data too: In Banff National Park in Canada, animals have used the six overpasses and 35 underpasses more than 200,000 times since monitoring began in 1996…

#lapd instigated a riot tonight. They retaliated against #artwalk #losangeles for some people expressing their rights to free speech using sidewalk chalk. There have been around 20 arrests for sidewalk chalk, specifically targeting community activists. They are being charged with felony vandalism for water soluble chalk. The supreme court has ruled that the use of sidewalk chalk is not vandalism. These are all illegal arrests and infringement upon freedom of expression. The #policestate showed their hand tonight when they mobilized hundreds of officers in #riotgear to disperse a crowd that had taken form near #spring and 5th. They eventually began deploying “#lesslethal” and chemical #weapons at peaceful people. There was no #riot here that did not begin with the #police. They made goddamm fools of themselves. I agree that capitalism stifles creativity on the whole, but what it doesn’t stifle is ease of distribution. So in terms of technology as a democratizing force…(which
I agree, as well, that it is), I’m not sure how a completely decentralized system would improve that. Then again with a completely decentralized system it might not be neccessary.
